Jeremy
Harris ...in case you missed him! Elie Fouere, Associate |
Jeremy Harris |
On Wednesday, April
26, in the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History's Fleischman Auditorium
a large turnout gathered for a guest lecture by Jeremy Harris, a man
with many titles. Mr. Harris was brought to Santa Barbara by a diverse
group of sponsors. The event was sponsored by Hayward Lumber, Built
Green Santa Barbara, Community Environmental Council, Architecture Foundation,
American Planning Association, The Sustainability Project and the Marvin
Design Gallery as well as the American Institute of Architects, Santa
Barbara Chapter. In his talk he addressed
many key political, ecological and design issues facing civilization
today. The audience was engaged through the entire presentation as the
material was well-presented, thorough, and sobering. The evening ended
with many questions from the audience and additional thoughts from our
invited speaker. The presentation brought together our Mayor Marty Blum,
Councilman Grant House, members of the university (UCSB), ecologists,
trades people, manufactures, architects and laypeople. The presentation
was well timed with the city’s work on a new master plan and the
AIA's ambition to insure that it is carried out in a logical and systematic
manner. Mayor Harris was
"discovered" by Joe Andrulaitis and Greg Rech on their winter
trip to Washington D.C. for Grass Roots '06. There, they were both impressed
with his ideas and presentation at a seminar they attended. Afterward
they convinced him to foray to Santa Barbara for an opportunity to enlighten
our community. After reading his credentials it is clear that Mr. Harris has a guiding principal to his work and life and hearing his presentation it is clear that sustainable cities is his guiding principal. In March of this year, I had the honor of representing our local chapter at the first State Board meeting of the AIA California Council of the year. As it took place in Sacramento, it was an opportunity to meet all of the staff of the AIACC as well as fellow board members, both rookies and returning veterans alike. The three-day event began with an orientation for first-time board members, followed by a reception at the AIACC to meet the staff and see their offices. The second day began with a lecture on the current political atmosphere in California, followed by a briefing of issues pertinent to our profession. There was also a presentation concerning subjects to discuss with our respective assembly-persons and senators during our visits later that day. The upcoming bills and issues that we were briefed on were as follows: Upcoming bills |
