Presidents Message

AIASB Members,

Next year, the American Institute of Architects celebrates its 150-year anniversary. As part of its celebration, the AIA has launched its nationwide "Blueprint for America" community service program (see AIA150.org for more information). The program "seeks to bring architects, citizens and community leaders together to address a community's distinct needs and awards grants to local components in support of their community visioning initiatives". AIA Santa Barbara applied for a grant in April as an initiative called "A Sustainable Vision for Santa Barbara". The goal for our initiative is to inspire Santa Barbara by educating our community about sustainable design, engage a community-wide effort to create a practical vision for Santa Barbara that will allow our citizens to maintain an acceptable quality of life, and to interpret the vision into sound planning principles that promote livable communities and sustainable design and advocate the inclusion of our principles into the City of Santa Barbara's General Plan Update for 2030. On May 19th AIA National awarded our chapter a $10,000 grant to support our initiative. We were one of only six chapters in the State of California which received a grant. We are extremely excited to have the funding necessary to help us in our endeavor. However, the work has just begun. Many of you attended our recent workshop for Upper State Street and the Jeremy Harris lecture. These two programs are examples of many future programs that will be necessary to achieve our goal. Your participation is crucial. As Jeremy Harris has stated, "Architects have to view themselves in the broader context. They need to get away from simply being concerned about iconic buildings and position themselves as builders of community. We are at a critical juncture in human civilization. The decisions now are going to determine our fate. We must change the paradigm. Who better to articulate that new urban vision than architects? No one else is stepping forward to champion this new urban agenda. I believe that architects have a responsibility and opportunity to step forward”.

I hope all of you understand the importance of our initiative and find the time to step forward and participate in our efforts. Santa Barbara architects have a long history of community involvement. Let us continue the legacy and help bring "A Sustainable Vision for Santa Barbara" to reality.

Respectfully,

Joseph Andrulaitis, AIA
