“Green from the Ground Up” is a film about a proto-type eco-home in the foothills of Santa Barbara. Utilizing over 30yrs experience, Campanelli Construction’s vision was to build an all green home with a sustainable approach the use of energy, natural resources, materials, water, waste and how it compliments it’s natural setting. The result is a creation of an inviting, comfortable and healthy custom home that has low maintenance, costs, and is easy to live in. It received over 400 points in “Built Green S.B.” well over the 220 points required for a 3 star rating. And the Title 24 California Energy code was exceeded by 76.1%. This was achieved from a multitude of green features covering: careful site planning, material selections, innovative building systems, energy, water use and generation, natural sun light and air flow patterns for proper house orientation and floor plan, insulation, lighting, heating and cooling, water filtration and purification, air quality and comfort. Some of these systems are: rainwater harvesting, solar electric and hot water, on-demand water heating, 95% efficient furnace, dual glazed low-e windows, SIPs engineered insulated wall and roof panels in place of wood stud framing, low or no VOC wall finishes, bamboo flooring, Aquel water bar and RO system, ceiling fans, Certainteed cement fiber fire rated siding, and drought tolerant native landscaping. Attention to detail and quality craftsmanship were applied at every step to create this custom California craftsman style home. Campanelli Construction has received multiple “Green Builder of the Year” awards and the California Energy Commissions “ Flex Your Power” award from Governor Schwarzenegger for innovation and education in green building. The “Green from the Ground Up” home reflects the cumulative experience and artistic talent applied by the builder to create a wonderful healthy place for a new home owner to enjoy life in.

Living Large in a Small Footprint

Berkus HomeThis 997 s.f gross (net 894 s.f. of living area) urban infill home, replaces a deteriorating 1400 s.f. dwelling. The home is a study in reducing a carbon footprint by eliminating circulation spaces, modeling storage and living functions after the efficiency of a small nautical vessel while utilizing sustainable design principles/materials.

The mixed-use neighborhood, first developed in the late 1800s, is sensitive to large-scale new development. The neighbors embraced the introduction of an under scaled dwelling. The success in formulating this small footprint was the utilization of height and light, creating a detached urban loft that reduces the compression of inner city living. Fourteen foot living area ceilings, 12 foot bedroom ceilings and 10 foot kitchen ceilings combined with skylights and north and south glazed openings creates an expansive living environment.

Ceiling high cabinets in the kitchen and bedroom maximize storage space, accessed by a movable ladder chair, custom designed by the architect, serving all areas of the home. Car arbor doubles as an entertainment pavilion. The roof is constructed of laminated glass. Side curtains, sculpture fence, track lights and radiant space heater aid in transforming the space. Recycled counters, low VOC paints, environmental rated insulation, energy star appliances, tankless water heater, among other features contribute to a small carbon footprint.
